Tesla Powerwall 3 for Solar Storage and Backup

Tesla Powerwall 3 stores up to 13.5kWh of energy for use after sunset, during higher-tariff periods or when the grid is unavailable. Its integrated solar inverter can support a new solar installation, while Powerwall 3 can also be added to many existing solar systems.

The right configuration depends on your solar production, evening consumption, property phase, switchboard, backup priorities and future loads. Where more storage is required, Powerwall 3 Expansion can add another 13.5kWh per unit, subject to Tesla compatibility and site design.

Powerwall Sizing, Backup and Installation Planning

Battery capacity alone does not determine which appliances can operate during an outage. Available power, property phase, motor-starting loads, switchboard layout and the circuits included in backup all affect the final result.

Level Electrical + Solar assesses your electricity use, solar production, existing inverter, switchboard and preferred backup loads before recommending a Powerwall configuration. We then design the cable routes, Gateway integration, mounting location and commissioning requirements for a compliant installation.

What Tesla Powerwall 3 Offers

13.5kWh Integrated Storage

Each Powerwall 3 provides 13.5kWh of storage with an integrated solar inverter, reducing the number of separate components required for a new solar and battery system.

Backup and Tesla App Control

Powerwall can store solar for evening use and provide automatic backup where correctly configured. The Tesla app shows solar production, household use, battery behaviour and backup reserve.

Expandable for Future Energy Use

Powerwall 3 Expansion adds 13.5kWh per unit, allowing storage and backup duration to grow as household consumption or EV charging needs increase.

Power Outages Compatible Tesla vehicles can coordinate with Powerwall during an outage when the charger is on a backed-up circuit
Backup Priority Vehicle charging may slow or stop to preserve stored energy for household loads
Electrical Review Switchboard capacity, property phase, charger output and simultaneous household loads must be assessed
Storage Sizing Higher EV consumption may justify additional Powerwall 3 or Expansion capacity
Best Suited For Homes planning solar, battery storage and EV charging as one coordinated energy system

Choosing the Right Powerwall Capacity

One Powerwall 3 provides 13.5kWh of usable storage. Powerwall 3 Expansion adds another 13.5kWh per unit without adding another solar inverter, making it useful when longer backup duration or greater overnight energy use is expected. We size the system around exported solar, evening consumption, peak household demand, property phase, backup priorities and future EV charging.

Tesla Powerwall Installation Across Gold Coast and Brisbane

Level Electrical + Solar designs and installs Tesla Powerwall systems throughout the Gold Coast, Brisbane and surrounding South East Queensland areas. Each project is assessed around the home’s solar system, electricity use, property phase, switchboard condition, mounting location and desired backup coverage.

We can help determine whether Powerwall 3 suits an existing solar system or a new solar installation, whether one unit provides enough usable energy, and whether Powerwall 3 Expansion should be allowed for now or later.

Tesla Powerwall 3 FAQs

Powerwall 3 can suit homes wanting 13.5kWh of storage, integrated solar, strong power output, automatic backup and detailed Tesla app controls. Suitability depends on your solar system, electricity use, property phase, backup loads, switchboard and available installation location.

One Powerwall 3 provides 13.5kWh of usable energy. Actual backup duration depends on how much charge is available and which appliances are operating. A home using an average of 1kW would use roughly 1kWh each hour, while air conditioning, cooking and EV charging can increase consumption substantially.

Yes, in many cases. Tesla states that Powerwall 3 can be added to existing solar systems and works with major solar inverter brands. The existing inverter, solar size, metering, switchboard and proposed backup configuration still need to be assessed.

Powerwall 3 can provide whole-home backup for many properties, but it is not automatic for every home. Property phase, inverter output, starting currents, large appliances and the switchboard layout determine whether whole-home or selected-circuit backup is the better design.

Powerwall 3 is expandable. Each Powerwall 3 Expansion adds 13.5kWh, and supported configurations can include up to three Expansion units connected to a Powerwall 3. Future expansion should be considered during the original site and switchboard design.

Powerwall 3 can be installed on suitable three-phase properties, but system output, metering and backup behaviour depend on the approved configuration and local network requirements. A site assessment is needed before confirming the available power and backup coverage.

Powerwall can supply stored solar energy through the home electrical system to an EV charger. Tesla vehicles can also coordinate charging during an outage when a Tesla charging connector is on a Powerwall-backed circuit, slowing or stopping vehicle charging when household loads need priority.

Tesla currently states that Powerwall 3 is not yet compatible with Powerwall 2, although a future software update is planned for supported configurations. Compatibility should be confirmed against Tesla’s latest advice before designing an expansion.

Tesla provides a 10-year warranty for Powerwall 3 and Powerwall 3 Expansion, subject to the current warranty conditions. Registration, commissioning and reliable internet connectivity are important for firmware updates and full warranty support.
